Web Wiz Carbon Offsetting 2018-2019

16 October 2018, in Web Wiz News, Hosting Services

World Land TrustAt Web Wiz we are committed to cutting our carbon emissions and off-setting those carbon emissions that we cannot eliminate.

While much of the electric power we use comes from our on-site Solar Panel Array we still need to use utility electricity at times.

While our electricity provider uses only 100% Renewable Energy Sources, like everyone else in the UK our electricity comes from the National Grid which uses a mixture of renewable, nuclear, coal, and gas. We therefore still offset all the electricity that we use.

For the 8th year, we have partnered with the World Land Trust through their Carbon Balanced Programme to offset our Carbon Emissions.

For in-depth information on how our contributions help protect carbon-rich wildlife habitats, the World Land Trust has provided us with a Carbon Balanced Report.

UK Solar Powered Data Centre

11 September 2018, in Web Wiz News, Web Wiz Data Centre

Solar Powered Data CentreIn May 2018 we opened our new purpose-built UK Eco Data Centre, one of the prime objectives was to build a Green Energy Efficient Data Centre.

Today Web Wiz is pleased to announce the completion of our on-site PV Solar Array that will generate electricity to power both our Eco Data Centre and our Office.

Our PV Solar Array consists of 50 high efficient German made Hanwha Q.Cell Solar Panels able to produce 305 Wp each. To increase the performance further a SolardEdge system has been fitted that uses Power Optimisers on each Solar Panel coupled with a SolarEdge Inverter allowing each Panel to work independently increasing the amount of power generated by up to 25%.

Our Solar Panel Array can provide 7 times more power on a sunny day than is used by our Facility and over a year will produce 80% of the electricity we use in our Data Centre and Office.

Being in the UK sunshine is rather limited especially during the winter months, so we are unable to have a 100% Solar Powered Data Centre, therefore there will be times when we will need to use Utility Power.

For carbon emissions from the use of Utility Power, we have since 2010 partnered with The World Land Trust through their Carbon Balanced Projects to off-set all our carbon emissions.

Web Wiz Data Centre Efficiency

22 August 2018, in Web Wiz Data Centre

Data Centre EfficiencyEnvironmental Ethics are at the core of our business and one of the primary design aims of our new Eco Data Centre was to make it as energy efficient as possible.

Our new Eco Data Centre has been running now for 3 months (May 2018 to August 2018) during this time we have been keeping a record of energy usage.

To calculate the efficiency of a Data Centre and help identify areas where improvements can be made The Green Energy Grid came up with Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) metric.

Over the first 3 month period our new Eco Data Centre has been running it has run with a PUE rating of 1.41. This is very good but we believe that it could be better.

By measuring our PUE we have identified areas such as UPS and Cooling Systems where further efficiencies can be made. We are looking into solutions with the help of Dorset County Council's Low Carbon Dorset to further reduce energy consumption.
