Web Wiz Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Today, the 3rd September 2021, Web Wiz is 20 years old!

In 2001, Bruce Corkhill founded Web Wiz while studying computing at Bournemouth University. Web Wiz was initially launched as Web Wiz Guide (www.webwizguide.com) on 3rd September 2001, offering a range of Web Applications written by Bruce along with Web Hosting Services.

We mainly focused on producing Web Applications during the first five years but found that many web hosts were not up to hosting database-driven web applications. Our web hosting soon became very popular through word-of-mouth, and our reputation for fast and reliable web hosting developed. We still rely on word-of-mouth today as we continue to grow.

While we have always strived to provide green hosting solutions and support conservation charities, the data centres that we were using did not share our ethics. To address this, we opened our own eco-friendly Data Centre in 2018 powered by on-site solar power generation and Tesla battery storage. We are now one of the most sustainable web hosting providers globally.

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary at Web Wiz, we all feel proud of what we have accomplished, and we are excited about the next 20 years.

We want to thank each of our 10,000 customers who have been with us on this journey, we do appreciate it, and we look forward to serving you for many years to come.

Web Wiz Achieves Cyber Essentials Plus Certification

Web Wiz has achieved Cyber Essentials Plus Certification. Cyber Essentials Plus is a UK government information assurance scheme operated by the National Cyber Security Centre.

The Plus Certification is awarded to companies who can demonstrate they meet strict security standards, including secure configuration, firewalls, user access control, malware protection, and patch management.

The Certification acts to reassure Web Wiz customers that we are working to the highest cybersecurity standards.

Web Wiz Carbon Offsetting 2019-2020

As an eco-conscious company, we aim to keep our carbon emission as near to zero as we can, with the majority of our the electricity generated from our on-site solar array.

While our carbon footprint is small, we have still produced a small amount of CO2 over the past year which we have offset through Carbon Footprint Ltd [Carbon Neutral Certificate 2019-2020].

Our contributions go toward Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) approved projects to reduce deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest and local tree-planting projects here in the UK.

Carbon Negative Web, Email and Server Hosting

There has been a lot of talk in the press recently that companies like Microsoft are aiming to become Carbon Negative by 2030.

Carbon Negative is when your carbon footprint is less than neutral, so you have the effect of removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

Here at Web Wiz, we have been Carbon Balanced since 2010 and Carbon Negative since 2018.

We offset our annual CO2 carbon emissions through VCS approved projects in the Amazonian Rainforest. We then offset the same amount of CO2 through tree planting projects within our region of the UK. As we offset our CO2 carbon emissions twice, this gives us a Negative Carbon Footprint.

Tesla Batteries Store Renewable Solar Energy

After a successful trial of Tesla's rechargeable lithium-ion battery system over the past seven months to store excess Solar Power during the day to use overnight, we have now doubled the number of Tesla's lithium-ion batteries that we have.

The additional Tesla batteries will allow Web Wiz to be self-sufficient for electrical power needs for a large part of the year using only the renewable energy produced by our on-site Solar power generation.

Vast Data Centres consume enormous amounts of power that add to the IT sector global CO2 emissions which is on par with the airline industry* At Web Wiz, we believe in providing a sustainable alternative for customers to host their websites.

Eco Data Centre Achieves 100% Uptime Since Opening

It has been 1 year since we opened our Eco Data Centre on the 17th of May 2018. In this year our Eco Data Centre has accomplished 100% Uptime with no outages to our Network.

To reach 100% Uptime, we have built a Multihomed Network with Diverse BGP Routing using multiple fibre connections from BT OpenReach and Virgin Media entering our facility at opposite ends of the building.

100% Uptime is an incredible achievement for a new Data Centre as there are usually teething issues in the first year, and we are all very proud of this achievement.
